Ostrich Style

Did you ever go to the zoo and see an ostrich? I have. You can learn a lot about this bird. In this passage, you will be learning about an ostrich’s lifestyle. The first fact is that an ostrich is the largest bird in the whole entire world! Think about it this way, being the largest person in the whole entire world. That would be cool! Another fact about ostriches is that male ostriches can grow up to 9 feet tall! Isn’t that tall for a bird? Also, ostriches can weigh up to 300-400 pounds. That’s pretty big for a bird! Surprisingly, males and females are easily told apart. This is because of the coloring of their feathers. Males are a striking black and white color while females and juveniles are a grayish brown color. Also, ostriches cannot fly. They actually spend most of their time on their feet. They can run up to 30 miles per hour, and sprint up to 40 miles per hour. They are adapted for running. Another fact about this bird is that they are agile. Did you know that ostriches are the only two toed bird in the world? Yes you heard me. Their only two toes help them a lot! They run on their longer toe and use their shorter toe for balance. Ostriches have unusual feathers. They have soft and fluffy feathers. In contrast, most birds have stiff feathers. You might be wondering why they only have fluffy and soft feathers. They only have soft and fluffy feathers because they protect the ostriches from sunlight. Also keeps them warm at night. Did you know ostriches have huge eyes? They are the largest of any animal! They are 2 inches across, and they are as big as their brain! You might think that ostriches aren’t smart but they really are! They are curious about everything! Also, did you know that ostriches use their wings as “rudders” to help them change direction when they are running? They do! As you can see, the lifestyle of an ostrich makes this bird pretty unique!
